Georgia Football Coaching Decision

Georgia just lost to UCF in the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, TN on Friday night. They failed to score a touchdown and managed only two field goals against what most would agree is a far inferior football team. This finished their dismal season with a terrible 6-7 record.

Looking back most will comment that Georgia did not have AJ Green for the first four games of the season due to a NCAA violation of which Georgia went 1-3 and that they lost close games to Colorado, Arkansas and Florida. Some fans may argue that Georgia could have potentially won another 6 games if things were slightly different. While some fans may argue just the opposite and suggest a forceful and immediate removal of Mark Richt as head coach at Georgia.

I don't see either one of these arguments as good options. For the first argument every team in every sport could potentially sit down and show how they could have won if just a couple plays or circumstances went a little bit different. It means nothing and that is why they play the game. Nuff said!

For the second argument of firing Mark Richt my most glaring question would be "who would Georgia replace him with"? I don't know of any HC candidate that could come in and have the immediate success that these fans will want. I would much rather keep the reigns in the hands of the person who has had lengthy proven success and give him every opportunity to turn it around. CMR has turned the program around once and I don't see any one else available to do a better job than him at the moment. Lets also not forget that CMR still has one of the best win percentages of any active coach at the moment.

So, while I can easily offer an opinion of what not to do you should be asking me what would I do? I would first give my best interpretation of what I think the problem really is. A few things that pop into my head are the countless penalties and off field instances that Georgia has experienced in the past few years, the play calling and the lack of a big time coordinator. I also contribute a lot of the lack of success to bad luck. My thoughts are that Moreno and Stafford had no choice but to depart early and there was no one able to fill that role immediately. I'm not sure if you contribute that to poor recruiting or just down right bad luck. On the contrary I really feel like Aaron Murray has enough upside to be one of the best if not the best QB ever at Georgia. He's that good.

I don't think anyone else is to blame except for CMR regarding the incessant penalties and off field issues. He needs to find a way to regain control of this team immediately. If there is anyone who needs to go I really think it's Coach Mike Bobo. At the very least strip him of his play calling duties. Georgia's offense was much more potent when CMR was calling his own plays.

I firmly believe that Coach Mark Richt is still the best man in the best position to turn around Georgia Football.
